Year 2

Teachers: Ms Brett-Smith
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Bridge
We are a happy and friendly class who take pride in doing the best that we can, and support each other to reach our full potential.

Mornings start with us working hard in phonics. In Year 2, we are now learning a variety of spelling rules and we are trying hard to use these in our writing. We then have our English lessons and we are reading a sequence book from Traction Man called ‘Traction Man Meets Turbo Dog’. Before our favourite time of the day lunch, we also learn Maths and Guided reading.

In the afternoons we follow a creative curriculum based on a topic each half term, where we find out the answers to all of the questions we may have. During the Autumn term we have been looking at the United Kingdom and the surrounded seas and we have also learnt about Florence Nightingale.

To find out more about our class and what activities we have been undertaking on a daily basis then please take a look at the details below. This page will be regularly updated with new material so please keep checking back for new information.

Visit to Foots Cray Baptist Church

As part of our RE work, Year 2 visited Foots Cray Baptist church this week. We walked down the hill in the lovely sunshine and saw Brenda waiting to greet us. We learned that the church is 182 years old! Inside we saw lots of the features we have been learning about in class including the pews, the pulpit and the lectern. Brenda showed us the baptistry and explained how adults are baptised. We finished our visit with a trip up to the gallery which we all found very exciting! A big thank you to the parents who came with us and also to our invaluable Mrs Bridge. Photos will be here soon!

Up up and away!

We also continued with our history work and compared hospitals now and in the time of Florence Nightingale. We decided that we’re very glad there are no rats now and that we have electric lights.

Our PE this week was based on practising a variety of skills one of which was standing long jump. The children had to stand at one end of a mat and then using the power in their arms and legs see if they could do a two-footed jump over the mat. Wow did they fly over that mat and by the end of the session most children had managed it. Well done to my Olympians of the future!

Class 2 are amazing!

This week has been a very busy and a very productive week in Year 2. I was amazed again at the children's writing which involved a focus on our superhero characters. Some people managed a whole page of A4 all in cursive handwriting!

Our Maths was challenging this week as we were making 2 digit numbers and comparing numbers to 100. Our homework this week is linked to using the greater than and less than signs as we needed a bit more practice. We finished the week with some work on Andy Warhol. We looked at his superhero prints and portraits and then had a go at creating our own portraits in his style. There will be photos to follow!

In RE we are learning about special places with a focus on churches. In connection with this we will be visiting Sidcup Baptist church on Thursday 12th October at 1:15pm. We will need volunteers to come with us so please let me know if you are able to help! Thank you.

Traction Man is Here!

We started work on our key text' Traction man is here' this week. We all really enjoyed acting out the story and talking about our favourite part. We then wrote descriptions of Traction man and were focusing on using full stops and capital letters as well as identifying nouns and adjectives in the story. I was very proud of the children's writing and asked Mrs Rowntree to come and have a look. She was very impressed too!

In our maths, we have been working on partitioning numbers as well as counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We had great fun in the ICT suite designing our own superheroes which we will be writing about on Monday. There was Gymnastics Girl, Rainbow man and Ice man just to name a few! The children demonstrated their skills in selecting tools and colours and showed good mouse control. We finished our week by beginning to learn about a real superhero from the past- Florence Nightingale. We were all surprised to learn that girls from rich families didn't go to school when Florence was a girl, that they were educated at home and as women were expected to stay at home and not go to work! We look forward to finding out next week exactly why Florence was a superhero!

Welcome to Year 2!

Hello! Welcome back to a new school year. It was lovely to see the children back in school with new uniforms and new shoes and so happy to see each other again after a long six-week holiday. We started the week by devising our class rules which are;

Be kind to everyone

Listen to each other.

Look after our equipment.

Try your best.

We also started to think about our topic of Superheroes. We talked about real and fictional superheroes and how they were different. We also wrote poems linked to our names which we are now writing out in best and will soon be up on our class display. Next week we will continue our Maths mastery work on partitioning and also start our English work linked to our key text Traction man. Phew! We will be busy!
