Year 6
Teacher: Mr Cowley & Mr Smith
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Harvey

During our final year at Orchard Primary School, we are focusing on “choosing kind” this mind-set is evident at all times: both in class and out on the playground and in our interactions with our peers and with adults around the school. We have all pledged to be “kinder than necessary” and have thought of many random acts of kindness (63 and counting) which we can implement in our daily lives.

Now that we are the oldest children in the school we are taking on more responsibility around the school. Our Head Boy, Head Girl and their deputies are involved in organising school events and fundraisers such as the Christmas shoe box appeal. Many members of our class have also taken on jobs which help aid the smooth running of the school such as distributing the milk and fruit each morning.

Also, being the oldest children in the school means that we have greater opportunities to represent the school in many ways. For example: we are chosen to show adults around the school on open days, we deliver food donations to the local food bank and of course there are the many sporting events that are held outside of Orchard Primary School such as: football tournaments, swimming gala, the borough-wide cross country championships and cricket festivals, held in the summer.

As we are getting ready to move to secondary school, we are becoming more independent: organising our week using our planners, recording our own reading and selecting appropriate resources to support our learning. We are also focusing on developing good habits now such as: time management - ensuring we complete and hand in homework assignments - these skills will help to make the transition to secondary school smoother.

In year 6 we have a keen focus on reading, each half term we undertake a reading challenge: so far we have been challenged to read one biography/auto biography and a classic book. We realise that reading a wide range of books has a positive impact on our writing. To further support our reading we regularly go to library to check out fresh new books. In year 6, we are encouraged to actively seek out new words we don’t know the meaning of in our reading books and share these with the class each morning – during the register- in this way we are building our vocabulary. Also we often spend time sharing picture books with younger classes as we want to share our love of reading with younger children and get them hooked on books too!

As we progress through the year, we are undertaking work on a range of interesting topics including: inspirational people, explorers, WW2 at home and the rainforest. In connection with these topics, we will be taking our learning outside of the classroom on a number of exciting trips.

In November, many of us will be taking the opportunity to visit Norfolk Lakes on an exciting, week-long outdoor adventure experience. We will be having lots of fun and finding out just how brave we can be.
